Electrical Electronics

Welcome Message

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Department of  Electrical Electronics Engineering. Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna. The Department is manned by a team of experienced academic staff who are at the forefront of teaching and research in their various fields of specialization. As you join the Department or wish to do so, be rest assured that you will be meeting a dedicated and hardworking team of academic staff ever ready to impart their best.I wish to express my gratitude to members of academic staff of the Department for their contribution to the progress of the Department. Thank you and God bless.

 History of the Department

Electrical and Electronic Engineering department was established in 1988 to award Bachelor of Engineering (B. Eng) Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The main aim of establishing the Department is to train Military Officers to have broad principles to develop the expertise and skills that will enable them to design, operate and maintain any electrical/electronic system, be it military or otherwise. Academic activities commenced in the Department in September 1989. The Department also offers Postgraduate programmes leading to the award of Postgraduate Diploma and Master in Engineering (M. Eng).

The Department has 3 laboratories namely; Electronics laboratory, Telecommunications laboratory and Electrical Power & Machines laboratory for the conduct of experimentation and research works at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. After 21 years of its existence as a purely military academy, the Federal Government upgraded the status of the Nigerian Defence Academy to Degree awarding institution in 1985 vide Decree No. 24, Nigerian Defence Academy Decree 1985. In 1988, the NDA Council approved the commencement of the engineering programme with the establishment of the Departments of Electrical &Electronic Engineering and Mechanical Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering. The Departments were to offer courses leading to the award of Bachelor of Engineering (B. Eng) in their respective areas.

The Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering started the Degree programme in September 1989 with 22 pioneer cadets of the 40th Regular Course. The pioneer HOD was Cdr AO Momodu, FSS psc MSc . Since inception, the Department has produced over 350 graduates with 10 finishing with First Class (Honours) Degree.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) accredited the B.Eng (Electrical/Electronic Engineering) programme in 2007 along with other Departments in the Academy. Accordingly the COREN also accredited the Engineering Degree Programme in 2007 in line with Decree No 55 of 1970 and Decree No 27 of 1972 (Amendment). The Department moved to the permanent site in 2008. There are 3 laboratories namely; Electrical/Electronics Laboratory, Telecommunications Laboratory and Electrical Power & Machines Laboratory that are adequately equipped for the conduct of experimentations, workshop practice and research work.

Philosophy of the B.Eng Programme

The general philosophy of the B. Eng programme is to produce graduate military Officers with high academic standard and adequate practical background of immediate value for the needs of the military in particular, industry and the Nation in general. In order to achieve this philosophy, the departmental programme is designed to train electrical/electronic engineering graduate officers capable of solving local problems and applying themselves effectively to the needs of the various sections of the Armed Forces of Nigeria. In fulfillment of the above, specific features have been incorporated into the programme. These include amongst others:

  • Common foundation years at 100 and 200 Levels for all Cadets.
  • Workshop practices, laboratory works and industrial visits.
  •  Project in final year on which the Cadets work alone under supervision.
  • Special skill and in-dept study in a particular area of the programme through optional courses or electives.
  • Adequate knowledge in the areas of Engineering Management, Economics and law.

Objectives of the B.Eng Programme

The aims and objectives of the Electrical/Electronic Engineering Programme are in consonance with the realization of national needs and aspirations in technology acquisition and Military /Industrial development. The present programme has been drawn to meet the requirements of the NUC’s approved Benchmark for Minimum Academic Standards, and the National Policy on Education. Hence, the programme aims to produce graduate engineering officers with sufficient academic background coupled with adequate practical experience to solve engineering problems for the benefits of the Nigerian Armed Forces in particular and the Country in general. Such graduate officers should be able to perform the following functions:

  • Design engineering projects and supervise their construction. Conduct maintenance study, investigate and evaluate various Electrical and/or Electronics Systems.
  • Install and maintain complex engineering systems so that they can perform optimally in peace and war time environment.
  • Adapt and adopt indigenous technology in order to solve local engineering problems.
  • Apply the fundamental principles, methods of analysis and design to the development and modification of war-like items.
  • Provide technical and managerial leadership for the needs of the Armed Forces at professional levels.
