Welcome Message from the Dean

Prof YA Umar
Dean, Postgraduate School
Profile

You are welcome to Postgraduate School,  Ribadu Campus. NDA Postgraduate School is obviously the most stable and consistent Postgraduate Schools in Nigeria. This is largely due to the visionary ideas and philosophy of the Academy’s authority, commitment of the academic staff and absence of unionism. In the same vein, participation in convocation ceremony at the completion of research and successful oral presentation also enhanced the quality of the School. It is least surprising therefore that, yearly more applications are received for admission, collaborations and partnership in scholarship and training from individuals and recognized higher Institutions & research Institutes.

History

Twenty years after the commencement of the Degree programmers at the Nigerian Defence Academy, the Academy’s Council approved the establishment of the Postgraduate School. This was in 2004. The official opening of the School was performed on 24th September 2005 by His Excellency, President Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, Commander – in- Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria. In attendance at the occasion was the then Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Peter Okebukola. NUC is the statutorily recognized government agency that monitors and regulates the activities of the Nigerian Universities in order to maintain standard and compliance. Following the opening, the School commenced with few postgraduate programmes in Arts and Social Sciences and Sciences. These pioneering courses included but not limited to, Masters and PhD in Military History and Defence and Strategic Studies, Biology, Material Sciences and Explosives.

The immediate aim of the School as  captured by the PG School Regulations for Higher Degrees (2005) was, as it is to the present, to provide advanced education and to encourage scholarly research that would support the needs of the Nigerian Armed Forces in particular and the country in general and to create an atmosphere of intellectual ferment at the Academy. In essence, the Postgraduate School of the Nigeria Defence Academy is to develop in the graduate student the spirit of enquiry through training in research in an atmosphere of intellectual independence and individual creativity combined with a strong sense of teamwork. Other objectives include but not limited to; provide the twin goals in imparting knowledge of academic and practical orientation by providing high quality training in research at Masters’ and Doctoral levels for service personnel and civilians; and opportunity for improving and upgrading the existing and potential manpower needed for planning, implementation and improvement of productivity and performance in the Armed Forces.

In 2009, appreciating the uniqueness of the NDA Postgraduate School as the only Military University in Nigeria, the Federal Government converted the School to an ‘Integrated Postgraduate School Campus’. The motive behind this designation was probably to allow free, in depth, multidisciplinary studies and research into fields that can productively transport the nation’s armed forces in particular and the country in general into one of the largest economies of the world. All over the world, military is a bastion of innovation, original discoveries and technical application of knowledge to the development and growth of the society. With this categorization, NDA PG School remains the only one of its type where there is no sharing of facilities between undergraduate and postgraduate students. At the same time, the Federal Government directed the TETFund to intervene in the provision of infrastructural facilities and modern research aids and teaching tools to the School. A remarkable achievement was recorded in this direction. TETFund officially handed over the refurbished structures and facilities to NDA in 2012.

Meanwhile, in order to test the focus and capability of the School, the monitoring Agency, NUC in 2010 involved the School in its System – wide Audit Exercise. All recognized Postgraduate Schools of Nigerian Universities were involved in the exercise which captured the data on programmes and teaching staff of schools. In August 2012, the NUC gave a clean and healthy certification to more than 39 programmes variously at Masters’ and PhD levels. This was preceded with the visitation of about 32 experts and scholars specifically selected to carry out Verification Exercise of all postgraduate programmmes of the Academy. Henceforth the NDA Postgraduate School is heralded in the Nigeria’s Educational landscape for its uniqueness, excellence and discipline.
